Isata Kanneh-Mason
A Belated Congratulations to one of our NiYO players - Isata Kanneh-Mason

Twelve year old Isata who attends The Trinity School in Nottingham became the youngest ever winner of Nottingham Young Musician of the Year last year. On top form she then won Clement Pianos Nottinghamshire Young Pianist, winning the 1st prize of a Kawai upright piano as well as one for her school. Not a surprise then that Isata studies piano, violin and composition at The Junior Royal Academy of Music in London. She recently performed a Haydn Piano Concerto with the Djanogly Orchestra, Nottingham and recitals in Bath, London and Leicester and Nottingham. We look forward to hearing her play again soon and a name to watch out for in the future.

Auditions 2008 – a great success

Audition 1 Yet again the number of applicants increased for our hotly contested vacancies this year. Almost 150 musicians were auditioned to either join or move up within our 3 orchestras. What was particularly pleasing this year is that we reached out to more people who had not been part of the orchestra before. Word is obviously getting around that the Nottingham Youth Orchestra is the place to be!

There was very tough competition this year: not only among the more popular woodwind and brass instruments, but also this year for violins (there were almost 9 hours of auditions for them!). The standard of musicianship was also outstanding, we had violinists and 'cellists in year 6 playing grade 6 pieces, and playing them very well too!

This is really exciting as we can see some amazing talent coming through. It certainly looks like the 3 orchestras in the NYO will be delivering some great concerts over the next season.

Audition 2In fact, the only areas where we are still needing some strength is in the viola section (come on you violinists – how about giving it a try?) as well as the bassoon which is sadly often overlooked (what about it flautists/clarinettists – stand out from the crowd!) and trumpeters how about giving the horn a go?
Also missing this year were new woodwind players – grade 3 – 6 for the Training Orchestra. Do you know anyone who didn’t audition?
Thanks go to the administrators of the audition day Paul and Andy, the accompanists and of course our lovely ladies on the front desk Emma and Paula, without whose help the day would not have run so smoothly.
